Pacific oysters recalled due to marine biotoxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning

If you’re a fan of oysters, be aware that certain Pacific oysters have been recalled from the marketplace due to a marine biotoxin.

The recall was triggered by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) test results. Health Canada warned that people should not consume the affected products, which were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario.

The biotoxin that was found in the oysters causes Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, which is a very serious and potentially fatal condition.

Symptoms include tingling and numbness of the lips, tongue, hands and feet, and difficulty swallowing with an onset of a few minutes and up to 10 hours after consumption. In severe situations, this can proceed to difficulty walking, muscle paralysis, respiratory paralysis and death.

The affected products were sold by Union Bay Seafood Ltd. and Intercity Packers Ltd.

Health Canada says that there have been no reported illnesses at this time. The CFIA is verifying that the recalled product is removed from the marketplace.
