17-year-old racing driver loses both legs after crash

The racing community and beyond are rallying together to raise money for Billy Monger.

Monger, a 17-year-old Formula 4 (F4) driver lost both his legs after a crash during a race on Sunday (watch at your own discretion).

A JustGiving page, which is like a GoFundMe page, was set up to raise money for the teenager and it’s already surpassed £500,000.

“After being involved in one of the most horrific crashes Motorsport has seen Billy Monger is a teenager that needs little introduction,” the JustGiving page says. “Thousands of people have already watched the haunting footage of the crash which left Billy fighting for his life.”

Monger is being called a “truly special” 17-year-old and someone who instantly lights up the room.

Despite struggling for a budget throughout his career, Monger fought his way up to the highest levels of motorsport.

Condolences and donations have started to pour in for Monger and at the time of this article’s publishing, £520,000 had been raised, which is more than twice of the initial £260,000 goal.

Leading the way when it comes to donations are some of the biggest names in the racing world, including Formula 1 stars Max Verstappen and Jenson Button, who each donated £15,000.

“Hey guys, this fellow racer Billy Monger had a big shunt this past weekend at Donnington and sadly Billy has had amputations to both legs,” Button wrote on his Instagram. “This guy needs our help so if you can please donate, I will be doing as much as I can to help this dude out.”

Other racers like Lewis Hamilton and former racers like Johnny Herbert have also tweeted their support and best wishes as well.

Monger is currently in a coma and is expected to be woken up in the coming days.
