The seven FortisBC employees who are helping with hurricane recovery efforts in the Caribbean have retreated to Miami as a safety precaution.
The B.C. crew arrived in the Turks and Caicos on Monday, September 11th as part of a 58-person operation crew from Fortis Inc.’s Canadian operations.
For more than a week, they helped restore power to the island’s critical infrastructure, which has included a water treatment plant and a medical clinic.
They’ve also taken down compromised power poles as a safety measure to avoid the poles from falling and doing more damage during the storm.
Tuesday was their last day on the group until after Hurricane Maria passes through the region.
They’ve retreated to Miami, Florida, where they’ll be able to get some much-needed and well deserved rest after the past week and change.
“It was tough for the team to leave,” said a release from FortisBC. “They understand how much the islands need electricity to support economic recovery and that restoring power to hotels and homes will help people will return to their normal lives.”
Crews are expected to return to the Caribbean on Sunday and begin work again on Monday, weather permitting.
FortisBC is also organizing a second crew to head to the Caribbean and help with the recovery efforts.
