Millennial artist collective Padlock Studios is looking for volunteers to help out at its open mic and live music events.
Director Miranda Dean said the downtown gallery needs a few people who can give up two to four evenings per month to help collect donations and greet attendees at the door, assist with some setup and cleanup and help the bartender restock and tidy — all while enjoying the show.
It has been two-and-a-half years since the studio welcomed artists to its private workspace and just over a year since the collective opened to the public with its first fine arts show.
Since then, Padlock has diversified into the music scene, something Dean said happened organically. The studio sees between 80 to 100 people come out to its events, including bi-weekly open mic nights on Fridays. It also hosts a variety of local bands in addition to fine art exhibits.
“I would say it’s a fairly unique crowd for Kamloops,” Dean said. “It’s not really a niche group. We get a lot of different people in each time.”
Padlock also has some studio space available for rent and is looking for artist submissions for an upcoming exhibit.
Inspired by the local documentarian group Our Social Justice Movement, Padlock is looking for submissions that involve a “vision of an ideal socially just world" and “examples of practices that help spread and progress social justice.” Find more info on the call for submissions online.
The next open mic is March 24th and Elsewhere, Echo Beach and Chatterbox will perform live at the studio on March 31st. Stay up to date on their events by checking out the website or Facebook page.
