Health Canada recalls over 300,000 pieces of children's jewellery due to excessive lead content

Hundreds of thousands of pieces of children’s jewellery have been recalled due to their excessive lead content.

The CTG Kool Charmz Links with Various Charms product should immediately be taken away from children and disposed of with household garbage, Health Canada warned.

Just under 330,000 of the products were sold in Canada between January 2003 and April 2021.

Health Canada explained that its “sampling and evaluation program has determined that the recalled jewellery contains lead in excess of allowable limits.”

It added: “Under the Children's Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age and contain more than 90 mg/kg total lead.”

Excessive lead can be highly toxic, particularly to children, and cause the likes of anemia, brain injuries and organ damage.

Health Canada said there have been no recorded incidents associated with the product, however.
