1. Indonesia's Mount Sinabung erupts and sends huge ash cloud into the sky

Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra erupted on Monday for the second time in a few days. According to authorities, the eruption sent a large ash cloud of over 5,000 metres into the air. The volcano has been put on watch, and residents within 5 km have been relocated.

2. Hundreds of people who helped in the Air India crash search and rescue put in quarantine


At least 600 people are in quarantine now after assisting with the search and rescue mission associated with the Air India crash. The isolation orders are meant to stop a possible outbreak of COVID-19. Local media reports that masks and gloves were not worn during the emergency, which could mean the virus may have spread.

3. Protests break out in Belarus over presidential election results


Protests are breaking out across Belarus as authoritarian incumbent President Aleksander Lukashenko won 79.7% of the vote in Belarus' presidential election," according to Politico. There are widespread accusations that the vote was rigged.


4. Hong Kong pro-democracy tycoon Jimmy Lai arrested under national security law


Pro-democracy activist and media tycoon Jimmy Lai was arrested for allegedly "colluding with foreign powers," according to an executive at his company. Hong Kong police said seven people were arrested on "suspicion of breaches of the National Security Law." Lai is the publisher of an outspoken pro-democracy media outlet in Hong Kong called Apple Daily HK.


5. Unrest and looting takes place in Chicago following police-involved shooting


Multiple clashes took place between police and members of the crowd in downtown Chicago early Monday morning. Authorities say 100 people were arrested overnight and 13 officers were injured. Additionally, on Sunday afternoon, an officer-involved shooting took place in Englewood.
