1. Canada’s inflation rate slowed to 6.3% in December, grocery prices remain high

The latest information from Statistics Canada shows that the country’s annual inflation slowed to 6.3% in December as gas prices cooled. However, grocery prices remained high and are up 11% on an annual basis, which is a slight improvement from the 11.4% in November. Canada’s annual inflation rate peaked in the summer at 8.1%.


2. Failed GOP candidate allegedly orchestrated shootings at homes of Democrats

A former Republican candidate for New Mexico’s legislature has been arrested on suspicion of orchestrating recent shootings that damaged homes of Democratic elected leaders. Solomon Peña, who lost his 2022 run for state House District 14 and claimed election fraud after his defeat, was arrested Monday by Albuquerque police.


3. NFL playoffs down to 8 teams with divisional round matchups set

The NFL’s wildcard round is in the books and the playoff field is down to eight teams. For this coming weekend’s divisional round, the Chiefs will host the Jags and the Giants will visit the Eagles on Saturday. On Sunday, the Bills and Bengals will do battle in Buffalo before the weekend is wrapped up with a showdown between the Cowboys and 49ers in San Francisco.


4. Small plane crashes onto road beside small airport in GTA

Commuters in the Greater Toronto Area were in for a bit of a shock on Monday when a small airplane crashed onto a road beside a small airport. The plane was trying to land on the runway, but crashed through a fence and spun 90 degrees before coming to a stop on the road next to the airport. Fortunately, police said everyone was safe and accounted for.


5. Fernandez advances at Aussie Open, Canadian men play today

Leylah Fernandez has joined fellow Canadian Bianca Andreescu in the second round of the Australian Open after knocking off Alizé Cornet in straight sets. Andreescu will play her second round match later today, as will Felix Auger Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov on the men’s side.
