2. 'Auld lang syne' was the NYE word of the day
'Auld lang syne' was the word of the day on Dec. 31, 2017. Written by Scottish poet, Robert Burns in 1788, it's become the classic song to ring in the New Year, but how many of us actually know what it means.
'Auld lang syne' essentially means: old times, especially times fondly remembered.

3. Calgary Zoo brings penguins inside to warm up
The Calgary Zoo marched its penguins inside after the weather was deemed too frigid to be outdoors. The king penguins headed indoors after temperatures dropped below -25 C.

4. WhatsApp comes back from global outage
As millions were attempting to send Happy New Year's messages, the messaging service, WhatsApp endured a major outage around the globe on Sunday. Messaging was down for about an hour.

But according to BuzzTech, as of Jan. 1, WhatsApp is expected to stop working on certain devices, including BlackBerry OS, Blackberry 10, Windows Phone 8.0 and more.
