1. Outsider wins Argentina election, promises huge cut to government spending

A dog-loving, rock-singing, chainsaw-wielding economist and tantric sex instructor has won the Argentine presidential election. Libertarian candidate Javier Milei, famous for his media rants and mop of dark hair, won 56 per cent of the vote, according to the latest count.

2. Shakira pays fine, avoids jail in tax fraud case

Shakira has agreed a deal with Spanish prosecutors after she was accused of tax fraud. The Colombian singer has paid an $11.26 million fine, though prosecutors had wanted her to serve eight years in jail and pay a $35.73 million penalty.

3. Emissions of top 1% equal to bottom 66%, report claims

The world's top one per cent of earners are responsible for more carbon emissions than the lowest 66 per cent, according to a new Oxfam report. Those with incomes of $192,000 a year – about 77 million people – accounted for 16 per cent of all CO2 emissions in 2019, the study claims.

4. Red wine headache mystery solved, scientists claim

Scientists in the US think they have found the answer to why some people suffer a headache from red wine despite drinking other types of alcohol without problems. Boffins at the University of California said a compound in red grapes can disrupt the way the body metabolizes alcohol.
