Armoured truck mishap rains $175K on US highway

The weather can often be unpredictable, but no one in Georgia could have predicted that a whirlwind of cash was going to surround their car.

Police with the City of Dunwoody (near Atlanta, GA) are looking for an extensive amount of cash that flew out of the back of an armoured Garda truck and onto Interstate 285 Tuesday night— approximately $175,000 in cash, according to the New York Times.

At around 8 p.m. officers attended to the highway after reports of "money flying all over the road," with callers describing over 15 vehicles had stopped and people were "frantically taking the money," Dunwoody Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.

Arriving officers found an armoured car on the shoulder of the highway. Crew from the armoured truck said that the side door came open while they were driving, sending the cash spiralling onto the highway.

While they were able to gather a few hundred dollars, the "passerby's sticky fingers" managed to gather the rest.

"While we certainly understand the temptation, it’s still theft and the money should be returned. We are thankful there were no crashes or pedestrians struck as a result of this isolated cash storm," Dunwoody PD wrote.

One man returned quite a hefty sum and earned a shoutout from the DPD on their Facebook page.

This afternoon after receiving additional reports of cars blocking the roadway, DPD posted on their Facebook advising cash-hungry folk that "THERE IS NO MORE MONEY," and to stop searching.
