Death-defying highline stunt prompts stern warning from BC SAR crew

North Shore Rescue (NSR) has issued a stern warning after receiving a photo of a daredevil highlining in North Vancouver.

The photo sent to NSR on Thursday appears to show a person traversing the line high above a valley between two peaks on Mount Strachan.

Located near Cypress Mountain Resort, rescue helicopters are frequently flown in the area, with NSR having conducted a helicopter training session earlier that day.

"We were just notified that it appears someone has set up a slack line on Strachan. This is EXTREMELY dangerous and could kill our members flying in the area," said NSR in a Facebook post.

"We and the RCMP also fly at night - there is zero chance of seeing one of these lines at night."

The post has attracted dozens of comments, many calling the highliners irresponsible.

However, some people took the opportunity to counter that highlining has its own rightful place in BC's backcountry.

“It’s a little disappointing to me that North Shore Rescue has chosen to vilify this so readily,” replied one commenter.

“Highlining is an incredible sport that occupies its own rightful place in the backcountry, and it is EASILY possible for athletes to work with the proper agencies in aviation to avoid user conflicts.

In response, NSR said the "bottom line" is that they were unaware that the line had been set up, which created an obvious hazard.

NSR provided an update on Friday, confirming that steps were being taken to have the line removed.
