Okanagan museum fires back at McDonalds

Museums may specialize in working with the past, but a Vernon museum is clearly well versed in new age social media banter.

The Greater Vernon Museum & Archives’ Facebook page had a very hot take on a new McDonald's radio commercial which is simultaneously funny and on point.

The radio commercial in question suggests that $5 is better spent on a meal at McDonalds than at a museum.

"You could get a museum tour for $5," begins the male narrator in the on-air radio commercial. A woman playing the role of a museum guide then starts.

"There were dinosaurs and then there weren't," says the ad’s museum guide. "OK, then, exit through the gift shop!"

The narrator then returns to propose that listeners could use that $5 on a kid's meal featuring a sandwich, fries and drink.

The Greater Vernon Museum & Archives’ Facebook page included a second response claiming that McDonald's french fries just aren’t the same as they used to be.

For those wondering, admission is by donation at the Vernon Museum & Archieves with individual and family memberships available for under $30.

The museum also hosts 11 permanent exhibitions on everything from pioneer settlement in the region and the Interior Salish, to the North Okanagan's military history.

"The Vernon Museum sees its role in the community to be both that of caretaker and resource centre. In the role of caretaker of the public trust, it has a responsibility to care for and house objects and information of historical value to the community," reads the Vernon Museum & Archives statement on its Facebook page.
