Anglers in the BC Interior hit with fines, lose their equipment after overfishing bull trout

The BC Conservation Officer Service had a busy day conducting angler compliance patrols in the Kootenays on Wednesday.

While patrolling on Kinbasket Lake near Mica Dam, conservation officers discovered several violations.

That included a group that was overfishing bull trout and angling with more than one fishing line, the BCCOS explained.

Eight fishing rods and 15 bull trout were seized, while the guilty parties were also slapped with four federal fisheries tickets.

“Bull trout have been classified as a blue-listed species in BC, due to declining populations,” explained a Facebook post from the BCCOS.

“Overfishing has been identified as one of the contributing factors to their decline.”

The post added that it’s very important to ensure fishing regulations, daily quotas, possession limits and gear restrictions are known and understood before embarking on a fishing trip.
