Snowfall warning in effect until Thursday for Interior mountain passes

This afternoon, Environment Canada (EC) issued a special weather statement for some of BC’s Interior mountain highways.

Periods of snow are anticipated for the Coquihalla Hwy from Hope to Merritt, along with Hwy 3 from Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass starting late Wednesday afternoon.

Snowfall could amount to about 5 to 10 cm with strong southwesterly winds, motorists are being asked to adjust their driving as road conditions could change quickly.

“An unseasonable low-pressure system combined with a cool and unstable airmass will bring snow to higher elevation passes,” EC explained.

“Precipitation will start as rain at times mixed with wet snow overnight. As temperatures cool late Wednesday afternoon, precipitation will transition to steady snow.”

The weather statement suggests that the snow could ease into light flurries by Thursday morning.
