BC Mounties shut down 2 parties at same vacation rental suite in under 24 hours

A vacation rental suite in Burnaby was the scene of two parties within the space of 24 hours, police have said.

The two separate hosts were each fined $2,300 and had their gatherings dispersed.

Police said they had shown a “complete disregard” for COVID-19 restrictions and had contravened the COVID-19 Related Measures Act.

The first report to police was made at about 2 am on Saturday morning.

Officers responded rapidly to the suite, in the 6300 block of McKay Avenue, and found 26 people in attendance.

The host had not taken the contact information of guests and there was not enough room to practise physical distancing, police said.

Within 24 hours, the same two officers who had been called to the suite at 2 am were back there again in response to a complaint that another large party was taking place.

This time, there were 17 people in attendance – still too many to allow for physical distancing, police explained.

“When we see the lives that have been lost and the sacrifices being made by people around our province due to COVID-19, it is quite frankly appalling that we still have people showing complete disregard for measures put in place to try to keep everyone safe and well,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

“If you have a vacation property booked in the coming weeks to host a party with 20 of your friends, take our advice and cancel it now because you will be reported and you will be fined.”
