BC hits record highs for COVID hospitalizations and ICU patients, reports 1,205 new cases

BC has hit an all-time for COVID-19 hospitalizations and ICU patients.

On Thursday, health officials reported that 409 people are currently in hospital and 125 people in intensive care with the virus.

According to officials, hospitalizations are highest among those aged 60 to 79, but are followed very closely by those 40 to 59.

Another 1,205 COVID-19 cases were also announced on Thursday, along with three new deaths.

Of those new cases, 301 cases were in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 730 in Fraser Health, 38 in Island Health, 69 in Interior Health and 66 in Northern Health.

There are currently 10,052 active cases across the province, which is also an all time high.

Earlier on Thursday, Dr. Bonnie Henry reported that BC could hit 3,000 new cases of COVID a day if people's contacts are not decreased.

Henry also said that variant cases now make up about 63% of all new cases in the province.

The B117 "UK" variant makes up 50% of those variant cases.

BC has administered 1,235,863 doses of vaccine and will begin vaccinating all school staff, fire fighters, police officers and child care staff starting with Moderna and Pfizer until AstraZeneca guidance changes.

Residents aged 55 and up are now being urged to book a vaccination appointment.
