BC records 12 deaths, 834 new cases of COVID-19 as restrictions continue

Health officials reported 834 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing BC's active case count to 8,941.

Dr. Bonnie Henry also announced 12 new deaths, marking the ninth straight day BC has seen more than 10 deaths attributed to the virus.

There are now 337 people in hospital and 79 people in critical or intensive care, both all-time highs.

The vast majority of Wednesday's new cases were in the Fraser Health region (529) and Vancouver Coastal Health region (174).

There were 66 cases in the Interior Health region, 45 in the Northern Health region and 20 on Vancouver Island.

New restrictions shutting down adult team indoor sports were also announced on Wednesday.

"All indoor adult team sport is also prohibited. This includes basketball, cheerleading, combat sports, martial arts, floor hockey, floor ringette, ice hockey, ringette, netball, skating, soccer, squash and volleyball," said health officials in a statement.

"Structured child and youth programs and sport are permitted,

Henry did confirm rumours that a hockey team from the Interior traveled to Alberta and returned with dozens of infections that were spread to the community.

Although, she stopped short of identifying the team and community.

Earlier Wednesday, the United Kingdom became the first country to authorize the new Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

Health Minister Adrian Dix confirmed that a vaccine will be ready in the coming weeks, but that it will not be mandatory.
