BC records 234 new COVID-19 cases, 1 additional death

Health officials are reporting 234 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the past 24-hours.

A total of 9,568 tests were administered to record those new cases, for a test positivity rate of 2.4%.

There are now 2,344 active cases across the province, with a total of 5,358 people under active public health monitoring.

Currently, 86 individuals are hospitalized with COVID-19, a surge of 16 from this time last week, with 24 patients in intensive or critical care.

Dr. Bonnie Henry also reported one additional death related to the virus and used the story behind the tragic passing as a cautionary tale.

"The death was in a person in their 80s in the Fraser Valley who attended a small birthday party with less than 10 people," said Henry.

"One person unknowingly brought COVID-19 and the majority of people became infected, which led to this death."

Henry also confirmed that the recent record-breaking surge in new cases can be traced back to gatherings during Thanksgiving.

The vast majority of cases are and have been in the Fraser Valley area, where 8,046 cases have been recorded.

Meanwhile, the Vancouver Coastal Health region has seen 4,545 cases, followed by Interior Health where 727 cases have been recorded since the beginning of the pandemic.

Health minister Adrian Dix made his first appearance at a media briefing since the election was called, providing an update on recent hires for contact tracing.

According to Dix, BC has hired 523 health care professionals to conduct contact tracing of cases around the province.
