The Interior Chemical Dependency Office has dubbed its upcoming fentanyl forum WTF? — and the title couldn’t be better suited to the ever increasing concerns around the deadly opioid.
In response to the rapid increase in overdose rates in B.C., Dr. Mandy Manak is hosting What the Fentanyl, a forum at Thompson Rivers University on March 30th, to provide Kamloops-specific information on the dangers of opioid addiction and even recreational use.
Manak has teamed up with community partners and families whose lives have been impacted by the fentanyl crisis for the information session. Speakers will answer questions about fentanyl and carfentanil — what they are, why they are so addictive, why they are dangerous, how prevalent they are and how they can impact recreational users.
“It’s not just people who are on an opioid agonist therapy, such as being on methadone or suboxone. It’s affecting other people who aren’t regular users,” said Cory Slater, clinical monitor with the Interior Chemical Dependency Office.
“It’s also people who are, you know, recreational, just that one time. There’s a huge concern for a lot of people.”
The forum will to be an open conversation so everyone can ask questions and interact with the experts. After the discussion will be training on how to use naloxone kits and free kits will be given to those who want one.
The forum runs 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Barber Centre at the House of Learning.
