After a two-year hiatus, organizers have confirmed that the Kamloopa Powwow will be returning to the Kamloops arbour this year.
The 42nd annual powwow will be back during the last weekend of July.
However, the organizers explain that the event is subject to Tk'emlúps te Secwe̓pemc (TteS) recreational and facility requirement and provincial health orders.
In addition, organizers recognize and respect the fact that the Tk'emlúps te Secwe̓pemc is still mourning and healing from the findings of 215 unmarked graves at the former residential school last summer.
“We thank everyone for your understanding that TteS is in mourning and for your continued prayers during our time of healing the Le Estcwicwéý (the missing),” reads the statement from organizers in a Facebook post.
“Please be understanding that we will be protecting the perimeter of our children, and as a result it may impact some parking and camping areas.”
From July 29 to July 31, dancers and spectators from across Canada and the western parts of the US will gather at Kamloops’ powwow grounds located off Hwy 5, alongside the beautiful South Thompson River.
