The City of Kamloops and Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc (Ttes) are partnering for the first-ever joint initiative to mark the third National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
The event will be held on Friday form 2-5 pm at the Tk̓emlúps powwow Arbour.
There will be different activities, cultural teachings, tours of the Kamloops Residential School and a one-mile Orange Shirt Day Walk beginning at 3 pm.
Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir said the First Nation band and community were grateful for the opportunity to mark the day with the city and whole community.
"The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day is an important opportunity to show allyship, honour survivors, and continue the journey of healing and education,” she said in a news release.
The commemorative event will be free and open to the public.
Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for the walk and an orange shirt to honour Orange Shirt Day, which started 2013 to raise awareness of the intergenerational impacts of residential schools.
Anyone who is interested in a tour of the former residential school should email [email protected].
Deputy Mayor Stephen Karpuk said the city was grateful for the opportunity to partner with TteS to mark the day.
“Only through ongoing collaboration can we continue the work of reconciliation that our two communities have fostered so diligently in recent years. I encourage all residents of Kamloops to attend, listen, learn, and respect the truths shared throughout the event,” he said in the release.
