Kamloops residents should prepare for some fast-rising water.
According to the City of Kamloops, high water levels are expected in the coming weeks as rivers reach their peak heights. Current projections from the BC River Forecast Centre are predicting that surrounding rivers will peak at a level between what was experienced in the peak flood years of 1999 and 1972.
Owners and property located along any watercourse should prepare for high levels and protect their properties. Sand and Sandbags are available at locations throughout Kamloops.
As of today, the River's Trail between Riverside Park and Pioneer Park will be closed as water is covering the path. The trail from Riverside Park from Uji Gardens to Sandman Centre remains closed due to the deployment of protective flood measures.
The Riverside Park beach is closed to the public and will remain closed until water levels recede.
On Friday, the City will close boat launches at Pioneer Park, McArthur Island, and Thompson Drive to protect boaters and limit wave action on the river. Boat on the river is not recommended at this time.
People on the water are asked to use extreme caution and travel at idling speeds to prevent bank erosion. As river levels continue to rise, boat passage under the South Thompson River railway bridge may not be possible.
Stay safe.
