Kamloops is full of generous people, and GoFundMe has made that official!
According to the organization's annual Year in Giving report, Kamloops was Canada's most generous city per capita in 2019. The River City was joined in the top five by Chilliwack, Kelowna, Nanaimo, and Victoria.
Kamloops' top fundraisers included a father's road to recovery, support for a burned-down school, help for a serious car crash victim, and to cover costs for a paralyzed man. Altogether, the four fundraisers brought in a total of $108,721.
The top five cities, which are all located in BC, have raised almost $4 million in 2019. As a country, Canada was fourth-most generous in the world. Since 2010, Canada has raised an impressive $400 million by more than four million Canadians.
The top moments in Canada for 2019 included a Toronto family raising nearly $1 million for their son's rare genetic disorder, the Muslim community in Windsor raising over $800,000 for a new masjid, residents raising $725,000 after a Halifax house fire that killed seven children, and bringing in $640,000 for a baby diagnosed with SMA Type 1.
Canada stayed true to its nature as 834 campaigns were created that mentioned "hockey." The most prolific donor in the country gave 91 times to 78 different fundraisers.
Residents looking to start a GoFundMe should aim for Tuesday as it's the most popular day to start a campaign. The fastest-growing donor categories included community, events, and education.
