There will be three new art exhibitions at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre throughout the month of June.
The Kamloops Arts Council (KAC) is presenting Redefining the Perspective: the many forms of Indigenous Art, Celebrating My Nigerian Roots, and Wildebirds, Wildebeasts and Wildewoods II.
From June 3 to July 27, Redefining the Perspective, by the Indigenous Resurgence Project, will showcase the talents of Indigenous artists across the Southern Interior with mixed media, 2D art, 3D art, textile art and jewelry.
The Indigenous Resurgence Project is a grassroots art collective based in Kamloops, and this exhibition is a way to showcase the unique and intricate diversity of artists in the area.
Some of these pieces follow familiar patterns and traditional practices, while others recontextualize art in new and modern styles.
This exhibition will be in the Alcove and Hallway galleries, with an artist reception on June 2 from 5 to 7 pm.
Celebrating My Nigerian Roots will feature art by Raluchukwu Ojah, a scholar currently studying at Thompson Rivers University.
With an interest in contemporary issues, Ojah uses pencils, oil paints and fabric to express different ideas.
“Celebrating my Nigerian roots is a theme which speaks about capturing the beauty in my cultural background and how it has deeply influenced my art-making process,” Ojah explains.
“My works explore the rich diversity of my culture while drawing attention to the issues being faced as an international immigrant in Canada.”
This exhibition will be in the vault gallery from June 4 to 28.
Wildebirds, Wildebeasts and Wildewoods II will showcase Marlene Wildeman’s talents with pencils, oils, acrylic and fabrics.
“My artwork has evolved from spontaneous creations of lifelike representations of birds, animals and narrative landscapes to a place where I am able to work deliberately with abstract concepts as well as with compelling natural renditions of the world around me,” Wildeman explains.
“My aim is to move the viewer as much as to make way for my creative impulses.”
Wildeman taught English and French in the Kamloops Thompson School District for 17 years.
A year after retiring, she had her first solo exhibition at Kamloops’ Sagebrush Theatre.
In 2014, she was juried into the Federation of Canadian Artists.
Her exhibition will be in the main gallery from June 4 to 28.
There will also be an Artist’s Talk on June 13 in the KAC main gallery at 2 pm.
The gallery hours are 10 am to 4 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays.
