Based on Kamloops MP Cathy McLeod’s cannabis survey, Kamloopsians are in favour of the proposed pot legislation — but just barely.
Out of the 1,612 people who responded to McLeod’s marijuana survey, 761 said they were against and 836 said they were in favour of Bill C-45.
McLeod today released the results of her riding-wide survey on the Cannabis Act, a mail-out survey she said received more responses than any other she has distributed.
“What I appreciated is that many people took the time to either share their personal accounts of how marijuana changed their lives, and others who just accepted the changes as inevitable,” McLeod said in a press release.
“Generally the response was divided, with a small margin in favour of the legislation.”
To the second question, “The Bill makes it lawful to consume and possess cannabis at age 18. Is that the right age?” 586 respondents said yes and 1,008 said no.
In response to recent statements made by the federal NDP, McLeod also asked, “Should all illicit drugs be legalized. Do you agree?” 326 of respondents agreed and 1,250 disagreed.
“The age that most people thought would be more appropriate was 19, the same as it is for alcohol consumption,” McLeod said. “Many were concerned with young people driving under the influence.”
“Overwhelming, 77% of people rejected the NDP proposal that all illicit drugs should be legalized.”
McLeod said the information would be passed on to Senator Nancy Greene Raine as the legislation will be deliberated in the senate in the coming weeks.
