Kamloops RCMP has recently received calls regarding a telemarketing scam where the fraudster claims the victim's computer has a virus.
In this situation, victims receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with a computer company who detected a virus on the victim's computer. The scammer then asks the victim to give them remote access to their computer so they can remove the virus.
After giving their information to the fraudster, victims found out that the fraudster had access to their banking and credit card information.
Police are urging the public to protect themselves by following simple steps. If you receive a phone call from someone about your computer system's security status, the first move is to hang up.
Do not give out personal information, credit card details, or account codes over the phone and never give a stranger remote access to your computer. Make sure your computer is protected from viruses by purchasing anti-virus software, but only buy from a trusted source.
Anyone who believes they have given their information to a scammer should contact their bank immediately or call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
