The union representing employees at the Kamloops Hudson’s Bay is calling for more transparency and certainty as the company proceeds with the liquidation of the store.
Earlier this month, it was announced that the country’s oldest retailer would be looking to fully liquidate its 80 stores, including the one in Kamloops.
In a statement issued Friday morning, the United Steelworkers union (USW) Local 1-417 said the closure will result in the loss of over 30 jobs, dealing a significant blow to the workers and their families.
Jordan Lawrence, USW Local 1-417 Financial Secretary, said the company’s ongoing financial struggles were “deeply concerning.”
“This news is absolutely devastating not only for our members but for the entire city of Kamloops and the surrounding area,” said Lawrence
“Hudson’s Bay has been a cornerstone of our community for over 45 years. Generations of families have shopped at this store and been served by our amazing members, who have taken great pride in their work”
With the pending closure of the store, the union is calling on the company to fulfil its obligations to employees and honour all wages, benefits and severance requirements.
In the statement, the union calls for immediate and clear communication regarding the liquidation, store closures, layoffs, pensions and severances.
Lawrence said employees deserve clarity, not “vague promises and backroom deals.”
“We’ve seen the devastating consequences for workers when companies like Sears shut down,” Lawrence added.
“Hudson’s Bay must protect the retirement security of its employees and ensure that pensions are there for its workers.”
The Hudson’s Bay in Kamloops has been unionized since 1993 and the USW represents 225,000 members across Canada
Union workers at the store went on strike from December 2023 until May 2024 for secured improvements to contract language, protections for union positions, wage hikes and lump-sum payments.
