Kim's Convenience is coming to Kamloops

Kim’s Convenience is coming to Kamloops’ Sagebrush Theatre on March 31 and staying until April 9 as part of Western Canada Theatre’s (WCT) 21/22 Heart Series.

Canadian playwright Ins Choi first debuted Kim’s Convenience as a stage play in 2011 at the Toronto Fringe Festival.

The award-winning play was adapted to create the largely celebrated television show of the same name, which aired for five seasons on CBC and Netflix.

The current remount of this Korean-Canadian play is based on Pacific Theatre’s 2018 production, and is coming from Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre Company.

The Arts Club is Canada’s largest not-for-profit urban theatre company in Canada, and is the principal gathering place for the theatrical arts in B.C.

“The play itself is a success story not unlike the immigrant experience," explained artistic director James MacDonald.

"Its first production was small, with very few resources, and through hard work and commitment it has become one of the most successful Canadian plays—and TV series—of all time.”

Director Kaitlin Williams and assistant director Soran Nakai have directed this play three times.

“Throughout our time working on Kim’s Convenience, we have been struck by its message of grace, reconciliation, and redemption across different generations of a Korean-Canadian family," they said.

"The story of this family is small, but the themes and struggles are universal, as is their hope."

The cast of this 75-minute play includes Devon Alexander, Brianna Kim, Howie Lai, James Yi and Maki Yi.
