Participants in Kamloops' Walk for Alzheimer's could win $1,000 prize

The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is returning to Kamloops on May 28.

All funds raised through the event, presented by Go Auto, will go to the Alzheimer Society of BC, which provides people living with dementia, and their caregivers, the support they need to maintain the best possible quality of life throughout the progression of the disease.

The Kamloops event will honour Sandee Hall, a member of the community who has been affected by dementia.

Residents are encouraged to register as an individual, start a new team or join an existing team.

The Walk is Canada's largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and it will take place in over 20 communities throughout the province.

Two in three British Columbians have a connection to dementia, and the number of people living with dementia in Canada is expected to rise to 1.7 million people by 2050, according to the Alzheimer Society of BC.

Until May 29, registrants have the opportunity to be entered to win a $1,000 Visa gift card.

For every $100 raised online, the participant will receive one entry into the draw.

Registration for the Kamloops Walk will begin at 9 am at the Tournament Capital Centre’s indoor track, and the Walk will start at 10 am.

For those who are unable to participate in the Walk but wish to be involved, the Society is offering two other options including Walk in a Box and Walk Your Way.

Walk in a Box allows participants to plan a small event with family, friends or coworkers and walk in their neighbourhood, or simply gather together and raise funds.

For Walk Your Way, those participating can get active in a way that suits them, whether that’s running, cycling, swimming, paddling, dancing or something else, to show support.

Anyone with concerns or questions related to dementia can call the Alzheimer Society of BC’s First Link® Dementia Helpline.

In addition to crucial emotional support and a listening ear, callers can access information about living with dementia, including practical strategies on a variety of topics, such as behavioural and communication challenges.

The English helpline, 1-800-936-6033, is available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 8 pm.

More information about the Society can be found here.
