On Friday, the City of Kamloops announced that the flood protection project at Riverside Park was almost done and is expected to be open later this summer.
The work included the construction of a new private dike, disguised with a façade along the beachfront, which will protect the park from a one in 20-year flood event.
The city says the newly paved and widened multi-use pathway winds along the river bed from the Sandman Centre to Uji Gardens and was designed to increase accessibility for all users.
Upgraded lighting will be the final step for the new pathway.
Unfortunately, due to supply chain issues, the new spray park will not be open until spring 2023.
However, plans are moving ahead with the construction of an inclusive playground within Riverside Park.
A news release indicates that the new playground would be built adjacent to the existing structure and would be the city’s first accessible playground.
Jill Moore, a wheelchair athlete, who helps with product development for Landscape Structure (the playground vendor) was very excited about the design of the future playground.
“Designing for inclusion is all about providing the just-right fit for every single person who comes to play, whatever their ability may be, and we see this throughout the Riverside Park design which truly invites everyone,” commented Moore.
That new playground is scheduled to be ready in early fall 2022.
