Kamloops’ air quality is the 10th worst in the province Monday morning.
A smoky skies bulletin was issued on Sunday for the South Thompson, including Kamloops, Rayleigh, Monte Creek, Cache Creek, Spences Bridge and Logan Lake.
According to the smoky skies bulletin, the region is expected to experience wildfire smoke for the next 24-48 hours.
The province says people with pre-existing health conditions, respiratory infections such as COVID-19, older adults, pregnant women and infants, children, and sensitive individuals are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.
Environment Canada has not issued a special air quality warning for the region, however, IQAir lists Kamloops with an air pollution level of 158.
That means the air quality is considered “unhealthy.”
“When the Air Quality Index (AQI) ranges from 151-200, the air quality becomes unhealthy for all,” the warning says.
“Sensitive groups are particularly susceptible to more health impacts. Sensitive groups include children, the elderly, pregnant people and people with cardiac and pulmonary diseases.”
Wearing a mask, closing windows, running an air purifier (if available) and avoiding outdoor exercise is recommended.
Several large wildfires, including the Shetland Creek fire near Ashcroft, are to blame for the poor air quality.
