The Face of Naturopathic Medicine: Dr. Faren Brogan, ND

Dr. Faren Brogan, ND has a big tool kit as a naturopathic physician. “It’s not just the herbs and supplements that most people associate with naturopathic medicine,” says Faren. “But it’s also acupuncture, IV therapy, diet, exercise, sleep and lifestyle plans and prescription pharmaceuticals, if needed. Basically, it’s everything that’s been proven to either work historically, or supported by evidence-based research, with a focus in nature and natural substances.”

As such, everything Faren does for patients is customized, be it preventative, to treat symptoms short-term or treat chronic conditions long-term. The majority of Faren’s patients are perimenopausal women in their 40s and 50s who are experiencing hot flashes, mood changes, trouble sleeping and brain fog as their hormones change. “These are often women who are burning the candle at both ends, busy with work and families,” says Faren. “We can help them with herbs and supplements, but also diet and exercise plans that can help them with all symptoms. If needed, we can also prescribe bioidentical hormone therapy. It’s a pharmaceutical, but it’s composed of natural substances.”

Faren sees the public’s interest in naturopathic medicine on the rise. “In Kamloops, where it’s hard to get a family doctor, people are seeing me primarily,” says Faren. “Most times, MSP will cover a portion of a regular visit and private insurance can pay the rest.”

Faren offers free 15-minute consultations to introduce people to what she does and how she can help. She’s also developing quite the pediatrics practice to help kids with all conditions, including food sensitivities and digestive issues. Stress has a big impact on our health, especially the stress of job loss and this pandemic. Often stress can be supported with herbs and supplements, while Faren works to develop better stress management through diet, exercise, and mindfulness, which leads to better sleep, fewer health problems and more balanced hormones.

Acupuncture can provide localized muscle pain relief, as well as help with digestion and hormone issues. Faren’s nine years of post-secondary education culminated with graduation from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto in 2017.

Her dream of where she wanted to practice always had mountains in the background, so she found her way to Kamloops to join Dr. Alison Beach at Thompson Valley Naturopathic Clinic as an associate.

Alison has proved to be an incredible mentor for Faren as she’s expanded her practice. Faren also walks the walk and talks the talk when it comes to the naturopathic lifestyle. She takes herbs and supplements as prevention, has a healthy family life, gets eight or nine hours of sleep a night, hikes and cross-country skis for exercise and does lots of reading for enjoyment to relax.
