On June 15, a pair of Thompson Rivers University (TRU) students, Tim Eggers and Roko Huser, won gold in carpentry at the Skills Canada Virtual National competition.
“For years, TRU’s school of trades and technology has actively participated in the Skills Canada competitions,” said Thomas Haag, TRU’s construction trades program chair.
“As our provincial winners were TRU students, our school became the host site for British Columbia.”
Students across Canada compete at regional, provincial and national levels. They must place first in regionals to move up, then place first in provincials to represent their province at the national level.
Eggers, a third-year apprentice, won gold for the post-secondary carpentry category.
“Getting a win feels very rewarding, the competition was stiff and I certainly never felt like I was far in the lead," he explained. "There were some great competitors all over the province and country.”
Huser won gold in the secondary carpentry category.
He still attends South Kamloops Secondary School and took TRU’s residential construction foundation program through the Youth in Trades Training program.
"The competition was really fun, and I had an awesome experience," said Huser. "It’s crazy how much effort and time goes into putting something like this on."
Haag said winning gold in these categories made the university very proud and congratulated both students and their instructors for their accomplishments.
