Dash cam footage posted online shows Kamloops RCMP with their guns drawn this morning on Columbia Street.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said police were working to apprehend a suspected impaired driver who had driven the wrong way up Columbia Street and then rammed an RCMP cruiser around 6:10 a.m.
Shelkie said in a media release that an officer was driving westbound on Columbia Street when he saw a vehicle driving ahead of him, also in the westbound lane, weaving and striking the snowbank on the median.
The vehicle turned left at Third Avenue and proceeded to travel west on Columbia Street, but in the wrong lane.
“The police officer continued on westbound in the correct lane,” Shelkie said.
“He activated his emergency lights, turned his unmarked police vehicle around into the eastbound lane and stopped in the far right lane in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then struck the police car head on at a low speed.”
The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. Shelkie said it is suspected the driver was impaired. The RCMP officer wasn’t injured.
The investigation is ongoing.
