The City of Kelowna has completed the purchase of a downtown property.
Communications manager Tom Wilson confirmed the purchase of 265 Leon Ave. to KelownaNow today.
The price was $2.9 million, with another $30,000 tacked on for legal and closing costs, Wilson said.
Located right next to Kelowna’s Gospel Mission, the property is currently a courtyard that is frequently used by people experiencing homelessness.
It will likely stay that way for some time, as Wilson explained that it was a “strategic land acquisition” by the City and there are “no plans for the property at this stage.”
He added: “It was bought from a third-party private landowner not affiliated with Kelowna’s Gospel Mission.”
Wilson also told KelownaNow that this is currently the only property in the 200-500 blocks of Leon Avenue that is owned by the City.
However, it’s a quickly-changing neighbourhood, as work has begun across the street and to the east on a massive project that will see three towers, one at 42 storeys, built in the 200 block of Leon Avenue.
