Police dog Fitz helps catch fleeing suspect after stolen car crashes into truck in Kelowna

A police pooch was the hero this morning after he helped find a fleeing suspect alleged to have crashed a stolen car into a truck in Kelowna.

Mounties were called just before 4 a.m. to reports of property damage to a parked Nissan Titan in the 500 block of Glenmeadows Road.

The owner heard a loud crash and, when he rushed outside to see the damage to his car, saw a “heavily damaged” idling black Chevrolet Cobalt nearby.

The driver had fled.

“Frontline officers arrived on scene to find vehicle parts strewn all over the roadway,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey explained.

“Investigators determined that the abandoned sedan had been reported, in late April, to Williams Lake RCMP as stolen.”

When they arrived on the scene, police set up an area of containment and began the search for the fleeing suspect.

One officer in the perimeter then found a man matching the description of the suspect and arrested him.

“Police Service Dog Fitz performed a confirmation track, where his search for a suspect from the crash scene led to where the officer had taken their suspect into police custody,” added O’Donaghey.

He added: “Our police dogs are invaluable to us here in Kelowna, from tracking suspects, to searching for missing people, or sniffing out illicit drugs or even explosive materials, they support our front line operations daily.”

A 35-year-old Kelowna man, previously known to police, now faces a number of potential charges and remains in police custody.

If you witnessed this crash and have not yet spoken to police, call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
