Residents warned after cougar sighting in Lake Country

Residents are being warned by the District of Lake Country following a cougar sighting in the area.

According to the DLC, a cougar was spotted by a resident walking their dog on the trail near Peter Greer. Thankfully, it did not attack.

If you do manage to come in contact with a cougar, keep calm, make yourself look as big as possible, slowly back away, and pick up small children and pets. Never turn your back or run away from a cougar.

"If you notice that a cougar that is watching you, maintain eye contact with the cougar and speak to it in a loud firm voice," wrote the District. "Reinforce the fact that you are a human and not an easy target. Back out of the area and seek assistance or shelter."

When a cougar shows aggression, the best method is to use whatever you can to fight back. A cougar is most vulnerable in its facial and eye areas.

"Use rocks, sticks, bear spray, or personal belongings as weapons. You are trying to convince the cougar that you are a threat, and are not prey."

Those who think they've spotted a cougar are urged to contact the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
