This month's Repair Café can help you fix your broken stuff

If you’ve got a broken down item that you’re not sure how to fix, don’t throw it out just yet!

The Repair Café returns to Okanagan College later this month and it’s the perfect way to learn how to fix the item with the help of talented volunteers.

These volunteers will work with you for no charge, fixing things like clocks, bikes, knick-knacks, small appliances, clothing and more.

Presented by the Regional District’s Waste Reduction Office, the event runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Okanagan College Trades Building.

“These Repair Cafés showcase the value of repair and repurposing- a counter to the throw away mindset,” says Rae Stewart, waste reduction facilitator.

“Our 30 plus volunteer fixers will attempt to breathe new life into just about anything. If you can carry it in under your arm, they will do their best to tackle the problem.”

The Repair Café has been happening twice annually for the past few years and Stewart says attendance continues to climb each time.

“People seem really tickled to have this service available to them, and we find they’re often surprised to learn that fixing many broken items is possible, sometimes even easy,” she said.

“If you attend, you will find you are encouraged to actively participate in the dis-assembly, troubleshooting and repair of your item, so you leave empowered, part of the process.”

There will be volunteers on site to help you repair:

  • Small appliances and other electrical items
  • Bikes
  • Sewing or mending clothes, bags etc.
  • Ceramics
  • Clocks
  • Upholstery (small items)
  • Small wooden items
  • Metal items and much more
