VIDEO: Okanagan College to build new Centre for Food Wine and Tourism

The provincial government brought $48.5 million to the table for a big announcement at Okanagan College.

A new Centre for Food Wine and Tourism will be built with room for 575 additional students.

The Minister responsible for post-secondary education in BC said it will be the first purpose-built facility of its kind in Canada.

“The tourism and hospitality sectors are facing challenges in finding and keeping skilled workers," said Selina Robinson.

“This investment will ensure people can access world-class training supported by industry in the Okanagan."

The new centre will also allow Okanagan College to expand its culinary enrolment by more than 125 students a year, and hospitality and tourism enrolment by 450 students per year.

“The Okanagan Valley is a prime spot for agri-tourism,” said Lana Popham, Minister for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “The Centre for Food, Wine and Tourism will help meet the demand for skills in the hospitality and tourism industry."

Okanagan College President Neil Fassina said it builds on the region's reputation for food, wine and hospitality.

"The Centre for Food, Wine and Tourism, will establish Okanagan College as the place to attend to get started on a career in these sectors."

And he suggested it will open up possibilities for the industry in the Okanagan.

"And to help our industry partners find workers to fit their needs."

Work on the building is expected to begin within the year, with completion in time to begin accepting students in the fall of 2026.
