A recent concussion prevented Meryeta O’Dine from competing in the snowboard cross qualifier that was held last night.
O’Dine suffered a mild concussion and scraped face while taking part in a training run on Feb. 14.
In a recent Facebook post by O’Dine’s mother, the athlete was examined by both Team Canada’s chief medical officer Dr. Bob McCormack and team doctors.
O’Dine was diagnosed with a concussion and not cleared to race.
According to the post, O’Dine knew it was a risky decision even if she was given clearance.
“I’m grateful to have the Team Canada medical staff behind me to make the right decision. It's disappointing to not compete but it's the right call for my health,” said O’Dine.
“As an athlete, you’re always going to want to push yourself but it's important to draw the line when needed.”
This shocking announcement came just days after Megan Tandy announced her leave of absence in the Women’s 15 km Individuals due to sickness.
The 21-year-old was able to reunite with her mom and watch the qualifiers from the sidelines.
“I’m proud to have made it this far, and you'll see me back at the Olympics for Canada and for myself, in four years time,” stated O’Dine.
We wish you a fast recovery O’Dine!
