Exhibiting in the Okanagan: Acclaimed NYC artist whose work includes commission from Michelle Obama

A New York City artist who experiments with light and perception is presenting an exhibition at Penticton Art Gallery at the end of the month.

Bentley Meeker, who in 2016 was commissioned to produce a “light sculpture” for Michelle Obama, will be visiting the city to deliver a free talk on March 30 at 2 p.m.

His exhibition, “Immaculate Refraction”, will be launched at 8 p.m. on March 29 and run until May 12.

On display will be more than 40 illuminated sculptural works and an installation that look at “the interplay between single frequencies of light and refractive elements and formations”.

The installation is composed of 42 sculptures that together create a tableau “challenging our understanding of the natural world,” Penticton Art Gallery explained.

Describing the art, the gallery added: “Meeker’s works scrape down our experience of artificial light to its rawest components, contrasting light frequencies and their resulting hues as observable springboards for contemplation, Meeker nudges the observer toward a new awareness about our environment by creating perceptual effects that are felt by the viewer long after the show is over.”

It will not be the first time that Meeker has exhibited in Penticton.

In 2017, he displayed his Weed World installation, which paid homage to cannabis culture.

“Light is the most powerful tool we have to create any feeling,” Meeker has said.

He has also created sculptures for the Burning Man Festival in the U.S.
