Impaired driving collision leads to vehicle fire in downtown Penticton

A vehicle collision on Westminster Avenue West on Monday night led to a vehicle fire and impaired driving investigation.

Cpl. James Grnady says the officers received the report shortly before 9 pm. When officers arrived on the 400-block of Westminster Ave. West, they found a Nissan and a parked Chevrolet Blazer on fire.

According to the officers, the Nissan had collided with the blazer, which caused the fire.

The Penticton Fire Department arrived on scene and firefighters were able to contain the blaze.

The initial investigation suggests that the Nissan was travelling westbound before veering to the right and rear ending the parked blazer.

Witnesses claimed that three individuals exited the Nissan and fled on foot.

However, once police arrived on scene, the driver of the Nissan returned . The 22-year-old woman admitted to being the driver and registered owner of the vehicle.

“Further, she confirmed she was responsible for the collision with the parked Chevrolet Blazer,” says a release from the Penticton RCMP.

“During their interaction with the woman, the investigating officer formed the suspicion that her ability to operate the vehicle was impacted by alcohol.”

She registered a “fail” on a roadside breathalyzer test.

Officers served her an immediate roadside prohibition and impounded her vehicle.

“Thankfully, no one was injured from both the collision and the resulting fires,” says Cpl. Grandy.

“The RCMP wishes to thank the Penticton Fire Department and the vigilant witnesses for their prompt response and assistance.”
