Smithers will soon be home to a new elementary school.
“I’m pleased to announce we are supporting the full replacement of Walnut Park Elementary school,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education.
“This new school will provide a bright and modern learning environment that will help students thrive in their education.”
The project will consist of a two-storey school on the northwest area of the current site, with a space for 440 students.
The new school with have open and collaborative learning space.
A neighborhood learning centre and the StrongStart program will be also be encompassed within the new school.
"School District 54 has had a focus on innovation and transformation in learning for several years, and we are thrilled to see this project approved,” said Jen Williams, Bulkley Valley School Board chair.
“We look forward to the opportunity to plan a new and innovative learning space that will help inspire students now, and into the future."
Around $28.5 million has been budgeted for the project.
The province will contribute up to $27.6 million for the project and the Bulkley Valley School District is contributing an additional $90,000.
Construction is expected to begin sometime in March 2019, with completion estimated for September 2020.
The existing building will be demolished following the opening of the new school.
