A wave of sudden deaths have been reported this summer at the hands of fast moving waters across the province.
At the beginning of July, Squamish RCMP recovered the bodies of two men and a woman who were swept over Shannon Falls while swimming in a pool of water.
Last week, two hikers were taken by fast moving waters while attempting to swim in Rubble Creek near Whistler. A 23-year-old woman died as a result of the accident and the “intense” white water.
On Thursday, a dutch tourist was sucked under the water at Elk Falls Park near Campbell River on Vancouver Island. According to RCMP, the woman was near the water’s edge when slipped and fell into the water where she was quickly pulled under. Her body was recovered by Search and Rescue teams hours later.
"Squamish RCMP as well as the Search and Rescue Teams from the Squamish area have seen far too many tragic incidents over the past few months" stated Corporal Sascha Banks, following last week’s death in Rubble Creek.
"We want people to come and see our beautiful area and explore but you need to be aware, to be prepared, to be educated, to be safe, and to understand the fast moving waters in this region. Be knowledgeable about undercurrents, rocks, snow and glacier fed waters, and if you don't know...ask those who do."
