It’s certainly commonplace for people to have bird feeders around their home, but sometimes those innocent little feeders can lead to bigger issues.
The BC Conservation Officer Service says it is still getting calls in several areas about bears getting into bird feeders.
“While your intention may be to feed our feathered friends, your bird feeder could instead bring a hungry bear to your yard – which can create a public safety risk,” the BCCOS explained.
The service added that both bird seed and suet are attractants, and offered up a couple of tips for those who insist on using bird feeders.
“We recommend only using them in the late winter and taking them in at night,” noted the BCCOS.
“Consider not using them at all if you live in a more temperate climate – such as Vancouver Island or the Lower Mainland – where bears may not den if food remains available.”
The BCCOS offers up more tips on how to reduce bear conflicts online.
