BC Mountie sustains 'potentially serious' injuries after alleged attack by impaired driver

A Mountie in Campbell River was allegedly attacked after stopping an impaired driver early Sunday morning.

According to local RCMP, the officer will survive, but the injuries are potentially serious, according to a statement from police.

Police first responded to a report of an intoxicated man operating a vehicle, locating and pulling him over around 3 am.

However, instead of cooperating, the man allegedly assaulted the cop.

Two civilians jumped in and restrained the man until more police officers arrived and took him into custody.

Jay Douglas, 20, of Alberta, has been charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

“At this point in time we believe our officer will make a full recovery, but this is a disturbing reminder of the dangers our officers face on a daily basis while conducting routine investigations,” Const. Maury Tyre said in a release.

“The Campbell River RCMP would like to wish our officer a speedy recovery and thank the public for their assistance in this incident.”

The investigation into whether the driver was impaired is still ongoing.
