The RCMP is crediting one of its own, and members of the public, with saving a man’s life earlier this week.
It was around 12:30 pm on Monday at the Pitt Meadows Recreation Centre when Cst. Dave Letwin heard a commotion in the multi-court area of the facility.
He ventured over to see what was going on and was told by members of the public that a man was not breathing and believed to have no pulse.
The bystanders and an off-duty Surrey Police Service officer were already attempting life-saving measures on the unresponsive man when Letwin jumped into action.
The officer called for assistance from other on-duty officers, Pitt Meadows firefighters and paramedics before beginning CPR and use of an AED on the victim.
“During these life-saving measures, the male’s breathing and a pulse returned,” an RCMP release explained.
When other first responders reached the scene, they took over for Letwin and stabilized the man for transport to hospital, where he is currently recovering from his medical emergency.
The RCMP said a combined effort from all parties involved helped produce a positive outcome in this case.
“I am incredibly proud of Cst. Letwin’s quick thinking and willingness to jump into action, which truly demonstrates his commitment to our community,” said Staff Sgt. Michelle Luca.
“His ability to provide life-saving measures was crucial in ensuring the positive outcome for this local community member.”
The RCMP says this incident highlights the importance of having a functioning AED in your place of business.
