BC man who killed grizzly bear handed $7K fine, 100 hours of community service

A man who unlawfully killed a grizzly bar near Squamish three years ago was sentenced in provincial court last week.

Carmine Bruno of Port Moody was ordered to pay a $7,000 fine and complete 100 days of community service for the killing.

He has also been banned from hunting and possessing firearms for five years.

Bruno’s actions in October 2021 were brought to the attention of the BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) after a public tip to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline.

“The accused first claimed self-defence, but the evidence found during the investigation determined that the killing was not justified, and contrary to the Wildlife Act,” said a BCCOS post.

According to the BCCOS, there is no open season for hunting grizzly bears in BC.
