It’s a tactic a buyer would maybe expect to see when purchasing a used car instead of a house.
In January, RE/MAX agent Steven Sion Hok Oei claimed a home he had listed was build in 2006 when it was actually constructed in 1976.
Located in Burnaby, B.C., with a listing price of $1.8-million, a potential buyer may have been misled, but the Real Estate Council of British Columbia was not.
Now, the council has ordered some hefty fines against the realtor.
In a decision posted online, the Council says Oei committed “professional misconduct.”
“He represented that the house on the property had been built in 2006, when he knew or ought to know that it was originally constructed in 1976,” reads the statement.
Oei will now be forced to pay a discipline penalty of $5,000 and an enforcement expenses fine of $1,500.
The council has also ordered the realtor to complete a remedial education course.
