UPDATE: High-risk BC sex offender wanted on Canada-wide warrant back in jail

(UPDATE: April 21 @ 2:35 pm) - A high-risk sex offender who violated his statutory release conditions is back in a BC jail.

Hayden McCorriston was located by officers from the Vancouver Police Department’s Chronic Offender Unit after receiving a tip from someone who recognized him.

On Thursday, VPD issued a public warning that McCorriston, who was convicted of multiple sexual assaults against strangers in 2022, had been granted a statutory release and was to live in a Vancouver halfway house.

“A Canada-wide warrant was issued on Friday, after McCorriston left the halfway house and travelled to the Downtown Eastside, where police believe he violated the conditions of his release and took deliberate steps to avoid being located,” reads a VPD press release.

The 30-year-old has been returned to jail and remains in custody.

(Original story: April 18 @ 3:40 pm) - A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a high-risk sex offender who was just released from custody this week.

On Friday afternoon, the Vancouver Police said a warrant has been issued for 30-year-old Hayden McCorriston after he failed to return to his halfway house on Homer Street in downtown Vancouver.

He was last seen at 10:25 am on Friday.

Police issued a public warning on Thursday that McCorriston was being released into the community.

According to the warning, he was convicted of sexually assaulting multiple women in Burnaby and Vancouver in 2022.

McCorriston is currently serving a three-year, two-month jail sentence for five counts of sexual assault, break-and-enter, failure to comply with an undertaking, assaulting a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime, mischief, robbery, indecent acts, assault, and assault by choking.

Police said that his sentence expires in 2026 but he obtained statutory release.

“Vancouver Police believe McCorriston poses significant risk of harm to the community and is a high risk to commit further physical and sexual violence,” police said earlier this week.

McCorriston is an Indigenous man, about 5’11” with a slim build and a shaved head.

He was last seen wearing a blue surgical mask, a black hat, a black long-sleeve shirt, dark blue or black pants and black shoes with white soles.

Anyone who sees McCorriston is asked to call 9-1-1 immediately.
